Justification By Faith
Justification by faith is the doctrine that God declares a sinner righteous solely on the basis of Christ’s righteousness, received by faith alone — not by works, merit, or performance. It is the beating heart of the gospel, the center of Paul’s theology, and the foundation of Christian assurance.
Justification by faith means God declares sinners righteous because Christ’s righteousness becomes theirs through faith alone.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.””
Romans 1:16-17
The Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed. He is referring to righteousness by faith in Christ.
“As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.””
Romans 3:10-12
There is no one righteous, not even one.
“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”
Romans 3:20
“No one will be righteous by the works of the law” means the law can diagnose sin but cannot cure it— it can reveal your need for righteousness, but it cannot produce righteousness in you.
In other words, “works of the law” is human effort to achieve righteousness.
“But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Romans 3:21-24
When Paul says “the Law and the Prophets testify to the righteousness of God” (Romans 3:21), he means the entire Old Testament was pointing forward to the gospel — to a righteousness God would give, not one humans could achieve.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We are created in the image of God and maintain attributes of God, love, kindness, etc, but we all fall short of God’s glory. We by nature rebel against God, seeking our autonomy independent of God.
The righteousness of God is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
Through Jesus believers are justified freely by God’s grace
The word freely is translated in John 15:26 without reason.
“But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’”
John 15:25
There is nothing we do to be justified.
God declares us righteous through Christ.
Our justification is through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Redemption is release through the payment of a ransom.
The ransom was paid to God—meaning God satisfies His own justice through the blood of Christ. The payment is God‑ward, not Satan‑ward.
God judged sin upon Jesus and satisfied his righteous demands.
“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”
Romans 3:25-26
Jesus’ blood was the substitution for our sin. God poured out His wrath on Jesus who died. He satisfied the required judgment in His body on the cross.
God did this to demonstrate His righteousness in judging sin. He did that to be just, in that He judged sin, and to also to be the One who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

1. The Universal Problem: No One Is Righteous
Paul begins with the collapse of human self‑confidence:
- “There is no one righteous, not even one.”
- “All have turned away.”
- “No one does good.”
This is not hyperbole.
It is anthropology.
Humanity is not partially broken.
Humanity is universally guilty.
This is why justification cannot be based on human performance—because no human possesses the righteousness God requires.
2. The Law’s Function: Diagnosis, Not Cure
Paul’s statement:
“No one will be declared righteous by the works of the law.”
This means:
- The law reveals sin.
- The law exposes guilt.
- The law shows the standard.
- The law condemns the sinner.
But the law cannot:
- produce righteousness,
- impart life,
- remove guilt,
- or justify.
The law is a mirror, not medicine.
3. The Gospel’s Announcement: A New Righteousness Has Appeared
Paul’s turning point:
“But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed…”
This righteousness is:
- from God, not from humans
- apart from law, not produced by law
- testified by the Law and Prophets, not contradicting them
- given, not earned
- received by faith, not achieved by works
This is the righteousness Christ accomplished through His perfect obedience and sacrificial death.
4. The Means: Faith Alone
“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”
Faith is not:
- a work,
- a contribution,
- a virtue,
- or a moral achievement.
Faith is the empty hand receiving Christ.
Faith unites the sinner to Christ so that His righteousness becomes theirs.
5. The Ground: Redemption Through Christ’s Blood
“All are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Redemption = release through payment of a ransom.
The ransom is:
- Christ’s blood
- offered to God
- satisfying God’s justice
- removing God’s wrath
- fulfilling God’s righteousness
This is why justification is free to us—because it was infinitely costly to Christ.
6. The Demonstration: God Is Just and the Justifier
Paul’s climax:
“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement… to demonstrate His righteousness… so as to be just and the One who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”
At the cross:
- God judges sin (He is just)
- God justifies sinners (He is the justifier)
The cross is the place where:
- justice and mercy meet,
- wrath and grace converge,
- holiness and love embrace,
- God condemns sin and saves sinners.
This is why justification is unshakeable—because it rests on God’s own righteousness, not ours.
7. The Result: Assurance, Peace, and Access
Justification produces:
- peace with God
- no condemnation
- access to grace
- joy in hope
- security in Christ
Justification is not the beginning of the Christian life.
It is the foundation of the Christian life.
Paul sites Abraham that was justified by faith.
“What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.””
Romans 4:3-8
David described the blessing of being justified by faith, which is transgressions are forgiven and sins are covered. He says the Lord will never count against them.
We are justified through faith in Christ and have peace with God.
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
Romans 5:1
